NEW YORKÂ - Yesterday, BIG EAST fans were treated to a gritty old-school battle between Seton Hall and St. John's, and in tonight's semifinals, they may get more of the same as the Pirates clash with Georgetown.
It should be fitting that the two teams meet Friday night at Madison Square Garden; the Pirates and Hoyas have nine previous tournament battles under their belt, and many of them have been memorable:
- March 11, 1988 - Seton Hall upset the Hoyas, 61-58, in the quarterfinals to reach its first-ever semifinal. It was the turning point for the program, which earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid that season and went on to the 1989 Final Four.
- March 10, 1991 - The Pirates topped the Hoyas in the BIG EAST final to win its first-ever tournament title.
- March 12, 1993 - The last time Seton Hall faced an eighth-seeded Georgetown team in the tournament as the top-seeded Pirates rolled in the quarterfinals, 83-69, en route to their second tournament title victory.
- March 12, 1994 - Georgetown ended Seton Hall's Cinderella bid for the tournament crown with a 76-71 overtime semifinals win that was between the sixth and seventh seeds.
- March 8, 2001 - The Pirates held Georgetown to just 40 points in a 58-40 quarterfinal victory. It's the fewest points Seton Hall's ever allowed against a BIG EAST opponent.
- March 14, 2019 - Myles Powell scored 29 points...in the first half, a BIG EAST Tournament record, to lead the Pirates to a quarterfinal win over the Hoyas, 73-57.
Friday night's game will be nationally televised on FS1 with Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson serving as the talent. The dynamic duo of Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will bring the heat on the radio via AM970 The Answer, simulcast on the Pirate Sports Network and TuneIn.
