Queens, N.Y. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team is assured of a winning BIG EAST record for the fifth time in the last six seasons (with the sixth being a .500 record), but the Pirates want to finish in the top-four of the conference for a sixth straight year, and the Pirates need a victory over St. John's Saturday night to assure that spot. Only one BIG EAST team has finished top-four in the conference in each of the last six seasons (dating back to 2015-16), and that's Villanova. The Pirates can be the second.
BIG EAST Tournament seeding is very much on the line as well:
- If Seton Hall beats St. John's, it will be the No. 4 seed and could face either St. John's, Xavier or Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals.
- If the Pirates lose to St. John's AND Marquette defeats Xavier, they will be the No. 5 seed. As a No. 5 seed, the Pirates can only face St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals.
- If the Pirates lose to St. John's AND Xavier beats Marquette, the Pirates will be the No. 6 seed. As the No. 6 seed, the Pirates can only play DePaul in the BIG EAST Tournament first round.
As for the game itself, Seton Hall will look to dictate pace against a St. John's team that likes to pressure and get up and down. The Red Storm are in the unique position of having the BIG EAST's best scoring offense at 79.3 points per game and the worst scoring defense at 77.0 points per game allowed. The Pirates will look to lean on Sandro Mamukelashvili, who is averaging 17.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists while making 59 percent of his field goal attempts (24-for-41) in four career starts against St. John's.
Saturday's game will be nationally broadcast on FS1 with Kevin Burkhardt and Jim Jackson on the call. Dave Popkin and Joe DeSantis will handle radio broadcasting duties on AM970 The Answer, simulcast on XM 384, the Pirate Sports Network and TuneIn.
