NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia) has been named one of three players to share 2021 BIG EAST Player of the Year honors, an unprecedented feat that the award is shared amongst three of the league's top stars, the conference office announced Wednesday. The vote was by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
This is Seton Hall's fourth all-time BIG EAST Player of the Year honor and second in as many years after Myles Powell captured the honor in 2020. Terry Dehere was Player of the Year in 1993 as was Dan Callandrillo in 1982.
Mamukelashvili, who is also a finalist for the 2021 Karl Malone National Power Forward of the Year Award and a candidate for the Haggerty Metropolitan Player of the Year Award, is one of only two players in the BIG EAST Conference to rank in the league's top-15 in scoring, rebounding and assists, both overall and in conference games only. He is second in the conference in scoring at 17.8 points per game, sixth in rebounding at 7.3 per game and 13th in assists at 3.1 per game.
The versatile power forward has helped the Pirates win games both with his scoring and with his passing abilities. He eclipsed 20 points in a game 12 times and has a pair of 30-point efforts, scoring 30 in an overtime win at Penn State and 32 in a home win vs. St. John's. He became the first power forward at Seton Hall to record multiple 30-point games since Arturas Karnisovas in 1993-94. He also has 14 games of seven assists or more, including seven big ones in a win at Marquette.
In February, Mamukelashvili became just the 45th Pirate in program history to reach the 1,000 career points milestone. Reaching 1,000 is a strong accomplishment for someone who only scored 87 points his freshman season, missed 10 games of his junior season due to injury and lost more games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mamukelashvili and the Pirates secured their sixth straight top-four BIG EAST finish and sixth straight .500 or better league record with a 10-9 mark. They will take on St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals Thursday at 3 p.m., live on FS1.
