
Pirates Take Third at 2021 BIG EAST Championships

The Pirates' final night in Ohio opened with the longest event of the championships, the 1650 Free. Caleb Smith (Charlottesville, Va.) took fourth for the Pirates with a time of 16:03.28 while freshman SAWYER KEYES qualified for finals for The Hall.
Ross Pantano (Bennington, Neb.) took second in the 200 Back Final with a time of 1:48.32 while Walker Parra (Pensacola, Fla.) and Jonathan Ware (Cypress, TX) qualified for finals. The place for Pantano was his second in Back events after taking fifth in the 100 Back earlier in the week.

The Pirates sent four swimmers to finals in the 100 Free with Ben LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.), Thomas Minar (Oxford, Conn.), Gideon Langenbusch (Oberhausen, Germany) and Liam Cosgrove (Sea Girt, N.J.) all qualifying for the finals event. LaClair took second for The Hall while Minar finished third with a lifetime-best swim of 44.60.

Thomas Staes (Berlaar, Belgium) led the Pirates in the 200 Breaststroke taking fifth in a time of 2:02.40, while Gennarino Conzemius (Bethel Park, Pa.) set a new personal best with a time of 2:03.88. Justen Lopez (Levittown, N.Y.) swam to a second-place finish in the consolation final going with a lifetime-best swim of 2:05.37 with Henry Keegan (Needham, Mass.) also qualifying for finals in the event.
Seton Hall would have three swimmers qualify for 200 Fly Finals: Ben Puglessi (Ada, Mich.), Justin Oosterwyk (Pequannock, N.J.) and Ji Ho Lee (Charlotte, N.C.). Oosterwyk would go on to take second in the finals with a new personal-best time of 1:48.24 while Ho Lee placed fourth in a time of 1:50.08
The Hall would close out the 2021 BIG EAST Championships with a solid swim and second-place finish in the final event, the 400 Free Relay. The relay team of Minar, Langenbusch, Cosgrove and LaClair would touch the wall in a time of 2:59.49.
Overall, the Pirates took third in the 2021 BIG EAST Championships behind Xavier and Villanova. In total, four different Pirates were crowned BIG EAST champions, numerous personal-best times were set and one school record fell.
