NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia) has been named the 2021 recipient of the Lieutenant Frank J. Haggerty Award, presented annually since 1934 to the Metropolitan Area's Div. I Men's College Player of the Year, the Met Writers Basketball Association announced Tuesday morning.
Mamukelashvili represents Seton Hall's 15th all-time Haggerty Award win, and the Pirates have now captured the top honor of the Metro area in three consecutive years and five of the last six. Only one other Met area school, St. John's (1983-87 & 1941-45), has ever had at least five winners over a six-year span.
The Haggerty Award completes the postseason awards circuit for Mamukelashvili, whose fantastic 2020-21 season netted him BIG EAST Player of the Year, Associated Press All-America honorable mention, NABC and USBWA All-District, first-team All-BIG EAST and first-team All-Met Writers. He also was a finalist for the 2021 Karl Malone National Power Forward of the Year Award.
The versatile power forward was one of only two players in the BIG EAST Conference to rank in the league's top-5 in both scoring and rebounding and one of only two to rank in the top-15 in scoring, rebounding and assists, both overall and in conference games only. He finished the season second in the conference in scoring at 17.5 points per game, fifth in rebounding at 7.6 per game and 13th in assists at 3.2 per game.
Mamukelashvili helped the Pirates win games both with his scoring and with his passing abilities. He eclipsed 20 points in a game 13 times and had a pair of 30-point efforts, scoring 30 in an overtime win at Penn State and 32 in a home win vs. St. John's. He became the first power forward at Seton Hall to record multiple 30-point games since Arturas Karnisovas in 1993-94. He also had 10 games of four assists or more, including seven big ones in a win at Marquette. In the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal win over St. John's, he delivered 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists to help the Pirates into the conference semifinals for the fourth time in the last six tries.
In February, Mamukelashvili became just the 45th Pirate in program history to reach the 1,000 career points milestone. Reaching 1,000 was a strong accomplishment for someone who only scored 87 points his freshman season, missed 10 games of his junior season due to injury and lost more games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He finished his career with an even 1,100 points, which ranks 38th all-time at Seton Hall. He also ranks 20th in program history with 651 career rebounds.
