How it Happened
The Hokies were the first to get on the scoreboard breaking through in the 5th minute when Pol Monells scored his first goal as a Hokie assisted by Jacob Labovitz. In the 39th minute, Mans Saebbo got the Pirate offense going with his first goal of his collegiate career. Raz Amir (Israel) and Maurice Williams (West Orange, N.J.) picked up the assists on the equalizer.
The tie would not last long, however, as Conor Pugh put the Hokies back on top when he was assisted by Cameron Joice on his first goal of the season. For the first time this season, the Pirates found themselves trailing at the halftime break.
The No.10-ranked team in the nation got off to a quick start in the second period of play, when Hokie-leading goal scorer Landon Ameres found the back of the net to put Virginia Tech up 3-1. Trailing by two with under 25 minutes left to play in regulation, Luca Dahn tallied for the second time in as many games to cut the Hokie lead in half. James Boote (Southampton, England) picked up his first assist of the season after finishing fourth in the nation in that category last season. Also earning a helper on the goal was Williams, his second assist of the match.
Turning Point
Just seven minutes later, trailing 3-2, senior JP Marin was able put home the equalizer to knot things at three. Assisting on the play was Jordan Jowers (Middlesbrough, England)'s for his second assist of the season. In the two overtime periods, the Pirates would outshoot the Hokies, 5-1 and 3-0 in shots on net.
