POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis,) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) registered double-doubles and Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 12 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team outlasted Marist, 3-2 (25-14, 25-15, 21-25, 16-25, 15-5), on Tuesday for their fourth straight victory.
Â
Seton Hall appeared poised to sweep Marist until the Red Foxes made a late run in set three to stay alive. After falling in set four, the Pirates dominated the Red Foxes in the decisive fifth set, 15-5, to improve to 4-3 on the young season.
Â
Holland finished with a career-high 31 digs, 11 digs and four service aces. Jakubowski had 17 assists, 12 digs, three kills and two service aces. Lucas finished with 12 kills, only three attack errors, and four blocks.
Â
Junior Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) had 11 kills, just one attack error, three blocks and three digs.
Â
SET 1:
Marist led 3-1 to begin the match, but their good fortune was short-lived. The Hall scored four straight points to grab a 5-3 advantage and never trailed again. With the score tied at nine, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run, and a service ace by Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) gave them a commanding 16-10 advantage. Ahead 19-13, Seton Hall closed out the opening set with a 6-1 run, which included a pair of kills from newcomer Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.). The Pirates had a season-high .441 attack percentage for the set, helping them throttle Marist, 25-14.
Â
SET 2:
The Red Foxes came running out of the gate in the second set, grabbing an early 10-6 lead. The Hall however, bounced back with a 7-0 run, capped by a kill from Jakubowski, to take a 13-10 lead, compelling Marist to call both of their timeouts. After Marist cut The Hall's lead to 13-12, the Pirates took off again, and an 10-1 run all but put the set away. Another kill by Jakubowski put The Hall in set point, and a kill by Rachwal ended the set in the Pirates' favor, 25-15.
Â
SET 3:
Marist turned in their best effort of the match, attacking at a .324 clip. The Pirates started strong, grabbing an early 8-3 lead, but the Red Foxes would rally. Trailing 11-7, Marist went on a 6-1 run to take a 13-12 lead. The Pirates bounced back with four straight points of their own, and a kill by Rachwal put them on top, 16-13. Seton Hall appeared poised to complete the sweep, up 20-17, but Marist closed out the set with an 8-1 run, to stun the Pirates late.
Â
SET 4:
Seton Hall found itself in trouble early in set four as Marist jumped out to a 5-1 lead, prompting an early Pirate timeout. The Hall cut their deficit to 12-9, but the Red Foxes responded with five of the next six points to take a commanding 17-10 advantage. The Pirates couldn't pull closer than six points the rest of the way as Marist tied the match at two sets apiece with a convincing 25-16 set four victory.
Â
SET 5:
The Pirates, however, didn't fold. Down 3-2 in the decisive fifth set, The Hall closed the match with a 13-2 run, which included five service aces. Ahead 9-4, sophomore Cagla Bengi (Bursa, Turkey) served up three consecutive aces. Wilkins connected on back-to-back kills to put The Hall in match point, and Katie Winkler (Troy Wis.) finished off the Red Foxes for a 15-5 fifth-set win.
