Lucas and Matheny combine for 21 kills in a three-set sweep of Iona on Friday.
NEW YORK – Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) and Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) combined for 21 kills and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team had a season-high .412 attack percentage in a three-set sweep of Iona, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) on Friday.
Â
Lucas again led The Hall offensively with 11 kills and only three attack errors, while Matheny had 10 kills and only two attack errors.Â
Â
Defensively, freshman Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) had a match-high 13 digs. Graduate student Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) had a match-high five blocks.
Â
SET 1:
Seton Hall's offense was clicking on all cylinders in the opening set, registering a .407 attack percentage. With the score tied at eight, the Pirates went on a 9-2 run and forced Iona to take both of their timeouts. A block by Rachwal and Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) upped the Pirates to a commanding 21-12 advantage. From there, they cruised to a 25-17 first set victory.
Â
SET 2:
The Pirates didn't suffer a letdown to start the second set, scoring the first nine points. Iona scored four straight points to cut their deficit to 11-6, but the Pirates didn't allow the Gaels to get much closer. In fact, Iona never led and The Hall went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-15 set two victory. Seton Hall was even more efficient in the second set, recording a season-high .522 attack percentage. They had 14 kills and only two attack errors on 23 attacks.
Â
SET 3:
Leading 6-5 in the third set, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run to grab a 13-6 lead and again force Iona to burn both of their timeouts early. Seton Hall wouldn't let their lead get less than four points the rest of the way. A kill by Lucas put the Pirates in set point, 24-18, and two points later, a kill by Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) ended the match in their favor.
