Newark, N.J. — Sparked by a 19-point effort by senior Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) in his first start for the Seton Hall men's basketball team, the Pirates returned to their winning ways on Sunday as they soundly defeated Wagner, 82-44, at Prudential Center.
Dawes was 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from three while tallying two assists and three steals for The Hall (3-1). Joining Dawes in double figures was graduate student KC Ndefo (Elmont, N.Y.), junior Femi Odukale (Brooklyn, N.Y.), senior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) and senior Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.). Jackson scored 16 points on 3-of-3 shooting from deep.
How It Happened
Wagner hit the first bucket of the game, a three-point basket, but the Pirates used four steals, including three by Dawes, to go on an 11-0 run and take an eight-point lead. Dawes' first made three of the game came in transition and it extended the Seton Hall lead to 12, 17-5, with 12:05 to play in the first half, giving the Pirates their first double-digit lead of the contest.
The Seahawks cut their deficit to eight, 23-15, following a layup and made free throw with 4:50 to go in the half but Seton Hall used a 10-0 run, including five points from Ndefo, that pushed the lead back to 18. Five points in the final four seconds gave Wagner momentum going into the locker room but the Pirates opened the second half on a 6-0 run that turned a 13-point game into a 19-point contest, 44-25.
The halftime score would be as close as Wagner would get as Seton Hall's lead ballooned to 43 points on a 23-5 run that lasted nearly eight minutes and was capped off by a layup by graduate student Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J.).
