In five years, he made a major impact on our department and helped our student-athletes achieve at a high level. We extend our deepest condolences to Louis's wife, Yvette, and their entire family, and we will remember him in our prayers as he finds eternal peace. He will truly be missed by all."
South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of former men's basketball coach Louis Orr at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer. Orr piloted the Pirates from 2001 to 2006 and took the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons. The department extends its deepest condolences to Louis' wife, Yvette, and the entire Orr family, and keeps Louis in its thoughts and prayers.
A true gentleman and a terrific coach, Orr was hired to lead the men's basketball program on April 4, 2001, and in five seasons, he helped The Hall to three winning campaigns in the BIG EAST Conference, and he notched 10 wins over Associated Press top-25 teams. His overall record was 80-69 (.537).
Orr's Pirates heard their names called on Selection Sunday twice, as the 2003-04 team went 21-10 overall and 10-6 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates were seeded eighth in the Atlanta Region and knocked off ninth-seeded Arizona in the first round, 80-76. The 2005-06 team went 18-12 overall and 9-7 in the BIG EAST and earned an at-large bid as a No. 10 seed in the Washington, D.C. Region.Â
Orr coached a bevy of successful Pirates during his tenure, headlined by Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer Andre Barrett, who was a two-time All-BIG EAST performer, a 2004 All-America selection and the 2004 Haggerty Award Metropolitan Player of the Year. In total, five 1,000-point scorers either played for or were recruited by Orr to Seton Hall.
In addition to his Seton Hall career, Orr has an incredibly deep tie to the BIG EAST Conference through other institutions. He attended Syracuse University and played his senior season in 1979-80, the first year of the BIG EAST Conference, and helped the Orange to a share of the regular season championship. After his NBA playing career ended, he served as an assistant coach at Providence and then at his alma mater Syracuse. He most recently was an assistant coach and then special assistant to the head coach at Georgetown.
