The Pirates snapped Villanova's nine-game win streak and move over .500 in BIG EAST play.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a career-high 33 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, and the Seton Hall women's basketball team snapped Villanova's nine-game win streak with a convincing 72-60 victory on Sunday.
The Pirates' victory is their fifth in a row and climbs them over .500 in BIG EAST play for the first time this season. The Hall used a 12-0 run between the first and second quarters to take the lead and never trailed again. The win also comes on a day that Pirates Katie Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) and Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) collected the 1,000th point of their respective careers.
Park-Lane was brilliant, going for a career-best 33 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting, which included 4-for-6 from three-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. She scored 15 of the Pirates' 22 fourth quarter points. Park-Lane also pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists.
Cooks notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.) was a third Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring. She narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
The Story:
Seton Hall started cold from the floor to start the game, connecting on just one of their first nine shots from the floor as Villanova built an early 11-5 lead. The Wildcats lead grew to as many as eight points, 19-11, with 1:34 left in the quarter before The Hall began to rally. In a run that started at the end of the first and stretched for nearly four minutes into the second, the Pirates scored 12 consecutive points. A layup by Espinoza-Hunter with 6:38 left capped the run and gave Seton Hall a 23-19 lead.
Leading 28-27, the Pirates took off again, going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers on back-to-back possessions from Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) and Espinoza-Hunter, to take a 38-27 advantage. Villanova's Maddy Siegrist scored at the buzzer to end the run, but the Pirates took a 38-29 lead into the break. Seton Hall shot 57% from the field in the second quarter, out-scoring the Wildcats, 23-10.
In the third quarter, Villanova cut their deficit to seven points, 42-35, but the Pirates responded with an 8-0 burst to extend their lead to 50-35 with 3:13 left in the quarter. The Wildcats scored the last five points of the quarter to cut into their deficit, but the Pirates carried a 50-41 lead into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Park-Lane took over. With 8:05 left in the contest, Villanova cut The Hall's lead to just six points, 52-46, but the Pirates answered with a 13-3 run to give them their largest lead of the game, 65-49 with just 3:21 left to play. Eleven of the 13 points during the spurt came from Park-Lane on the strength of a pair of three-pointers and a three-point play.
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, February 18 when it returns to newly-renovated Walsh Gymnasium to host Providence. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloSports subscribers.
