Seton Hall is now 20-9 overall and 11-8 in the BIG EAST, heading into next week's BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Despite losing starting point guard Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for the second half, the Pirates saw inspired play from graduate student Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J.) who scored 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range in 35 minutes while being the primary ball handler. Graduate student Alexis Yetna (Paris, France) posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and junior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) chipped in with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and five rebounds.
On his birthday, graduate student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) played his trademark stellard defense, racking up five steals and hitting a critical bucket late in the second half.
How It Happened
After going back and forth early, Creighton jumped out to a 26-15 lead with 8:21 to play in the first half after Seton Hall had called a timeout.Â
Seton Hall would go on to close the half on a 12-2 run over the final 6:14 and held Creighton to just one field goal in that span. Five of those points were scored by Harris, including a pull-up trey that cut Seton Hall's deficit to two, 28-26, with 3:36 to play in the half. AÂ second-chance layup by Yetna tied the score at 28-28 and two possessions later, after Creighton answered to retake the lead, Cale found an open Samuel who took one dribble and calmly drained the three-point try with 17 seconds that the Pirates a 31-30 lead heading into halftime.
With 9:47 to play in the game, the Bluejays took a 53-49 lead following two made free throws. The Pirates responded with back-to-back treys by Harris and Yetna that flipped the script and gave The Hall a 55-53 advantage. Rhoden then went into takeover mode, hitting consecutive midrange pull-up jumpers that extended the Pirates' lead six, 59-53, with 4:15 to go.
Creighton put forth two responses with under three minutes to play but Seton Hall countered both times. Graduate student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) hit a mid-range jumper that quieted the road crowd and with the Pirates holding onto a one-point lead, a driving layup made by Rhoden with 59 seconds left made it 63-60.
The Pirates' defense buckled down and came up with a turnover and a final defensive stand. The latter stop led to Samuel being fouled and making both free throws in a one-and-one that sealed the victory.
