South Orange, N.J. - The Pirates opened BIG EAST play on Thursday night at Owen T. Carroll Field, falling 1-0 to Providence. Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) made four saves in the defeat.
How it Happened
Providence tested the Pirate goalkeeper early, as Thaea Mouratidis found the ball on her left foot inside the penalty area in the fifth minute. Mouratidis fired from point blank range on Gordon, who slid and made the stop to keep things scoreless early on.
Gordon was called upon to make another stellar save in the 50th minute. As the Friars built a counter-attack, a shot from Meg Hughes was once again stopped by the Pirate netminder.
Defense kept the Pirates in the match, as Providence held the 14-5 edge in shots, as well as a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. However, the Friars were able to strike for the lone goal in the 87th minute, as Hannah Pinkus slid and flicked one past Gordon.
News & Notes
The Pirates will remain home on Sunday as they welcome Villanova to Owen T. Carroll Field for a 1 p.m. start.
