Both Taylor Jakubowski and Maddie Klungel had double-doubles.
CINCINNATI, OHIO – Setters Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) both recorded double-doubles, but the Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Xavier, 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 11-25, 26-28), on Saturday.
Â
For the third time in four matches, The Hall won the opening frame, but ultimately fell in four sets. This matchup was closer than the others, however, with two of the four sets extending beyond 25 points.
Â
Jakubowski had team-highs of 15 assists and 14 digs, while Klungel notched 12 assists and 10 digs.
Â
Two additional Pirates came close to notching double-doubles. Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a team-high 10 kills to go with eight digs, while Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had eight kills, 10 digs and four aces.
Â
SET 1:
Trailing 16-10, The Hall scored five straight, and a kill by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) cut its deficit to just one. From there, the set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team grabbing an advantage greater than three points. A Walsh kill gave The Hall a 24-23 lead to enter set point, but Xavier was able to stave off the loss. Xavier entered set point, 25-24, but the Pirates called a timeout and were able to regroup. Out of the break, a kill by Walsh tied the score at 25, a kill by Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) put the Pirates in set point, and a Xavier attack error gave The Hall a 27-25 first set victory.
Â
SET 2:
Xavier never trailed in the second set as they jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Leading 9-5, Xavier scored six straight to take a commanding 15-5 advantage. A kill by Subasili cut The Hall's deficit to 20-14, but the Musketeers responded with three consecutive points to go up, 23-14. Xavier went on to tie the match with a 25-17 victory. Both team had an attack percentage well under .200 in the second set, but the Musketeers were able to pull off the convincing victory.
Â
SET 3:
The third set started out just as difficult for the Pirates as the Musketeers jumped out to a 12-3 lead in set three. Seton Hall cut its deficit to 15-9 on a block by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.), but Xavier bounced back with a 9-1 run to enter set point at 24-10. A service error by Xavier temporarily prevented The Hall's set loss, but the Pirates returned the favor with a service error to give the Musketeers a dominant, 25-11, set three victory.
Â
SET 4:
A block by Matheny gave The Hall an 11-8 lead in the fourth set, but Xavier bounced back with four straight point to take the lead and force a Seton Hall timeout. A kill by Matheny gave The Hall a 15-13 advantage, but Xavier rallied to tie the score at 17. With the score tied at 19, Xavier scored five straight points to enter match point. The Hall rallied, however, and scored six straight points of their own, and back-to-back aces by Walsh put the Pirates in set point, 25-24. The Musketeers were able to stave off the set eliminator, and went on to win set four, 28-26.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Oct. 13 when they host Marquette in Walsh Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m. The match will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available for FloSports subscribers.
