
Seton Hall Downs Providence in Four Sets

The Pirates get back to .500 in BIG EAST play with a 2-0 weekend.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) had a team-high 11 kills and both Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) collected double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team downed Providence, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 25-12), on Saturday.

The victory gets The Hall back to .500 in BIG EAST Conference play at 7-7 and firmly into the conference tournament playoff picture.Â

Bucciarelli had 11 kills, only two attack errors, seven digs, two aces and two blocks in a strong all-around effort. Matheny had 10 kills and 11 digs, while Jakubowski tallied a team-high 16 assists with 10 digs.

SET 1:
The first set wasn't pretty, but the Pirates were able to take advantage of 11 Providence attack errors. In fact, The Hall's defense was able to hold the Friars to just -.040 attack percentage in the opening set. A block by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) and Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) gave The Hall its largest lead of the set, 22-18. A kill by Subasili put the Pirates in set point, 24-21, and after two Providence points, a kill by Bucciarelli won set one for The Hall, 25-23.

SET 2:
Trailing 10-9 early in set two, Providence scored five straight to grab a 14-10 advantage. The Hall, however, responded with a 6-0 run, and a kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) gave it a 16-14 lead. With the set tied at 23, a Matheny kill put Seton Hall in set point, and a block by Subasili won the set for The Hall.Â

SET 3:
The Hall scored the first two points of the third set, but then PC took over. A 13-4 Friars run gave them a 13-6 advantage. Three straight points by Providence extended their lead to 19-10, and The Hall couldn't recover. The Friars won set three, 25-16, as The Hall attacked at only a .061 clip.Â

SET 4:
With the score tied at two early in set four, The Hall went on an 11-2 run, capped by back-to-back aces by Bucciarelli, to give it a 13-4 advantage. Already ahead 17-8. Seton Hall went on a 7-2 run and an ace by Hadlee Ackerman (Atlanta, Ga.) put it in match point, 24-10. Three points later, a block by Klungel and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) capped a four-set match win. The Hall had nine kills and only one error in the final set.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 8 when they return to historic Walsh Gymnasium for a match against local BIG EAST rival St. John's. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
