The Hall now enters its Christmas break winners of five straight.
WASHINGTON – The Seton Hall women's basketball team rallied from a 21-point deficit early in the contest to stun Georgetown, 57-49, in its first BIG EAST game of the season on Wednesday.
The Hall trailed 21-2 after the first quarter, a program record for points futility in a single-quarter, but turned it on over the final three quarters, outscoring the Hoyas, 55-to-28. The Hall out-rebounded Georgetown, 19-to-15 in the second half, after being out-rebounded 16-to-4 in the first quarter alone.
Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) scored a team-high 14 points to go with six rebounds. Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) added nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Makennah White (Farrell, Pa.) had another strong outing off the bench with eight points and two steals.
THE STORY:
The Hall started the game cold from the field, missing its first seven shots. The Pirates didn't score their first points of the contest until the 2:13 mark of the first quarter, and by that time, Georgetown had gotten off to a 14-0 start. The Hoyas held Seton Hall to just 1-for-11 shooting in the opening quarter, but more alarming was the fact that The Hall was out-rebounded 16-to-4 in the first 10 minutes. Seton Hall trailed 21-2 after one quarter, setting a program record for fewest points in a single quarter.
The Pirates looked like a different team to start the second quarter, scoring 10 of the first 14 points and forcing the Hoyas to take an early timeout. After missing their first nine three-pointer attempts, Baines connected from deep to cut The Hall's deficit to 29-15 with 1:42 left before halftime. The Hoyas eventually took a 31-17 into the break.
Down 34-20, The Hall scored seven straight to cut its deficit in half, and back-to-back layups by Satterfield on consecutive possessions made it a 34-27 game with 6:48 left in the third. Trailing 38-27, the Pirates went on a massive 12-0 run, and a three-pointer by Brazil Harvey-Carr (Camden, N.J.) with 57 seconds left in the third gave them their first lead of the game, 39-38.
After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, the Pirates took over late. Down 47-44 with 4:52 left to play, The Hall closed the game with a 13-2 run, including the final nine points of the game. Satterfield fueled the Pirates' late run with a number of "hustle" plays and added five points down the stretch.
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 when it returns to historic Walsh Gymnasium to take on BIG EAST rival Providence. The game will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. Tip-time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
