Payero Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week

South Orange, N.J. - Graduate student Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after earning the win on the mound for the Seton Hall baseball team at No. 12 North Carolina on Friday.
Payero collected five strikeouts in four innings of scoreless relief work, helping lead the Pirates to their first win over the Tar Heels since 2011. He faced 15 batters and allowed only two to reach base. After coming on in the sixth inning, Payero held UNC scoreless in the home half of the seventh before striking out the side in the eighth and retiring the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.Â
The win gave the Pirates its first road or neutral site victory in a season opener since 2017 when Seton Hall defeated Michigan, 5-4, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Seton Hall returns to action this weekend when it travels to Sugar Land, Texas where the Pirates will play Northwestern State, Houston Christian and New Mexico State over three days at the Sugar Land Classic starting on Friday, Feb. 24.
