South Orange, N.J. - For the sixth time in the last seven postseasons contested, the Seton Hall men's basketball team will be playing in a national postseason tournament as the Pirates travel to Boulder, Colo. to take on Colorado at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14 in the first round of the 2023 National Invitation Tournament. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
The Pirates (17-15) will be competing in the NIT for the 18th time in program history and for the first time since 2011-12. Tuesday will be the first ever meeting between Seton Hall and Colorado.
Continuing the best season for a first-year head coach in program history, Shaheen Holloway is the first Seton Hall head coach to lead the Pirates to a postseason berth in his rookie season since Tommy Amaker guided The Hall to the NIT in 1997-98. That team featured Holloway as a sophomore. Holloway has already established program records for most wins by a first-year head coach in school history (17) and the most BIG EAST victories (10). Leading a team made up of six newcomers and four returners, Holloway accomplished these feats while also playing one of the toughest schedules in the country this season as the Pirates' slate currently ranks 34th in NET SOS and 28th in KenPom.
The Pirates posted four Quad 1 wins this season, three of which came away from home, and went 6-13 overall against opponents in the first two quadrants. They're currently slotted 77th in the NET and 70th in KenPom. Seton Hall has been one of the top defensive teams in the country this season and it currently ranks 22nd in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency and it ranks in the top 55 nationally in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and three-point defense.
