
The Hall Drops Non-Conference Finale to UMBC

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) collected a team-high 14 kills and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in four sets to UMBC, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 16-25, 16-25), at the Penn State Classic on Sunday.

The setback completes the non-conference portion of Seton Hall's schedule with a 6-5 record. BIG EAST Conference play begins next weekend.Â

Middle blockers Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) were named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team. The duo combined for 12 blocks today against UMBC.

Matheny finished just one dig shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs. Jakubowski recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 16 assists and 10 digs.

Although the set was close early, the Pirates never led in the opening stanza. A kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) cut The Hall's deficit to 9-8. But UMBC responded with four of the next five points to jump ahead, 13-9. From there, the Retrievers' lead methodically increased. Down 24-16, the Pirates staved off two set points on back-to-back blocks, but UMBC ultimately won the opener, 25-19. Seton Hall had only six kills and a -.051 attack percentage in set one.

The second set featured 11 ties and four lead changes until The Hall took control late. Trailing 17-13, the Pirates went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-17 advantage. UMBC cut their deficit to 19-18, but Seton Hall scored four of the next five points, and a kill by Matheny put it on top, 23-19. A Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) kill put The Hall in set point, and a block by Subasili handed set two to the Pirates, 25-21.

A kill by Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) gave Seton Hall a 12-11 lead in set three, but UMBC responded with a 10-1 run to grab a commanding 21-13 advantage. A kill by Walsh cut The Hall's deficit to 21-15, but the Retrievers closed out the set with four of the final five points.Â

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Sept. 22 when it opens BIG EAST Conference play against Providence in historic Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
