CHARLESTON, S.C. — With clutch play from Chaunce Jenkins and David Tubek, the Seton Hall men's basketball team defeated VCU, 69-66, in an overtime thriller in the first round of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic at the TD Arena.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Chaunce Jenkins would score 22 points (6-10 from the field in the second half) and David Tubek would provide a career-high 9 points (3-3 from the field, 3-3 from three). The Rams (4-1) struggled mightily from the field (22-of-60) due to the Pirates' nationally-ranked defense, while Pirates produced their best three-point shooting day of the season (58% from three).
How It Happened
The beginning stages of this game were befitting of a matchup between two of the nation's best defenses. As a result, through the first four minutes of play, the two sides combined to shoot 3-11 from the field. With 13:00 left, the Pirates held an 9-8 lead over the Rams with four of those points coming from guard Dylan Addae-Wusu. VCU responded quickly as Max Shulga netted two quick buckets to put the Rams back up with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
The Pirates' stingy defense took hold as the half began to wane, helping them regain a 20-18 lead with 4:59 left in the first half after Isaiah Coleman successfully netted a trio of free throws. A pair of turnovers from the Pirates would see VCU reclaim the lead and grow it to a 25-21 margin with 1:25 remaining in the first half. Just like they have all season, The Hall fought back and tied the game 25-25 with 18 seconds remaining in the half off a Yacine Toumi three-pointer. In the waning seconds of the half, a Zeb Jackson three would break the tie and send VCU to the break with a 28-25 lead after 20 minutes of play.
VCU would start the second half pressing the Pirates as they would go on a 9-2 run with 15:14 remaining, growing the Pirates deficit to 37-29. The Pirates would cut the deficit to three after a Chaunce Jenkins coast-to-coast and-one would result in a mere 37-34 VCU lead with 14:08 on the clock. VCU would grow its lead back to 42-34 with 12:33 remaining, but the Pirates would once again counter and reduce the deficit to 47-46 thanks to a five point run from a foul-troubled Chaunce Jenkins. Not long after, having not lead since there was 5:50 left in the first half, the Pirates would retake the lead 53-52 with 5:20 remaining off of David Tubek's second three-pointer of the season.
After a tough fight, the Rams would reclaim the lead and grow it back to 57-53 with 3:55 remaining, but the Pirates would not be denied a chance at the win. David Tubek would first draw the Pirates within one after another clutch three, cutting VCU's lead to 57-56. After coming alive in the second half, Chaunce Jenkins would net three free throws and land a clutch layup to put the Pirates up 61-59 with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Despite strong defense from the Pirates, Max Shulga would once again net a end-of-half shot to send this game to overtime tied 61-61.
The first points of the overtime period would go to the Pirates as Chaunce Jenkins converted a circus layup to put The Hall up 63-61. He would extend the Pirates' point total to 65, but the Rams would make it a 65-64 game thanks to a trio of free throws from Max Shulga.
With a slim one-point lead and under a minute on the clock, David Tubek would nail his third three of the night to put the Pirates in front 68-64 with 35 seconds remaining in overtime. After Chaunce Jenkins converted one free throw to put the Pirates up three with ten seconds remaining, The Hall's defense forced the Rams into a tough three pointer. After collecting the rebound of the miss, the Pirates ran out the clock to secure the 69-66 victory in overtime.
