NEWARK, N.J. — Despite a late comeback attempt, the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to Oklahoma State, 85-76, in a BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle matchup.
Isaiah Coleman led the Pirates (5-5) with 18 points (7-of-12 from the field), while Scotty Middleton recorded a career-high 16 points (6-of-7 from the field, 4-of-4 from three). The Cowboys (6-2) only had five double-digit scorers, while Pirates only registered three double-digit scorers.
How It Happened
In the opening minutes of this interconference clash, Oklahoma State came out of the gate with their sights set on the Pirates. The visitors opened the game shooting 3-of-3 from the field, but a jumper from Prince Aligbe would make it a one possession game as the Pirates trailed 7-4 with 17:20 mark of the first half. Not long after, a Dylan Addae-Wusu three with 14:41 remaining kept the Pirates within touching distance, with the Cowboys still leading 12-9.
Oklahoma State remained undeterred in the face of the Pirates' defensive pressure. The Cowboys went on a 15-point run to extend the Cowboys lead to 18, 27-9, with 10:25 remaining in the half. Off the bench, Scotty Middleton and Gus Yalden sparked the Pirates offense with four points each with 5:52 left on the clock. The Hall closed the half on a 6-3 run, but the team entered the break trailing the Cowboys 45-26 through 20 minutes.
Out of the break, Oklahoma State struck first, extending their leading margin to 23 points, 49-26, with 19:14 remaining in the game. Pirates steadily clawed back the deficit little-by-little. The Hall first drew the margin down to 17 points, 55-38, with 13:22 remaining thanks to strong defense and buckets from a quartet of Pirates, including three points from Yacine Toumi. They continued to push their way back into the game off of seven consecutive points from Isaiah Coleman, but the deficit held steady at 17 points with 11:56 left on the clock.
After another Cowboy run, the Pirates' big men enlivened The Rock. With strong play on both ends of the floor, Gus Yalden and Godswill Erheriene helped reduce the Pirates deficit to 14, 68-54, enlivening the crowd at The Rock with 8:07 remaining in the half.
Both sides remained at a stalemate as the margin between both schools barely changed in either direction. With all to play for, the Pirates swung the momentum in their favor as the stretch run approached. A Scotty Middleton three with 2:39 remaining would reduce the Pirates deficit to 10, 73-63, with 2:39 remaining in the game. With the crowd at their back, the Hall forced multiple turnovers and Middleton added another three to bring the home side within 7, 77-70, with 57 seconds remaining. They would get no closer however, as the Cowboys escaped the Pirates' defensive grasp, handing the Pirates an 85-76 defeat.
