Baines Nets 1,000th Point in UConn Setback
2/7/2024 9:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HARTFORD, CONN. – Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) collected her 1,000th career point, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to No. 11 Connecticut, 67-34, at the XL Center on Wednesday.
For a second straight game, The Hall turned up its defense against the nationally-ranked Huskies, but it ran out of gas late.
I'yanna Lops (Stamford, Conn.) led the Pirates with nine points. Baines had four points along with a team-best six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
THE STORY:
Lops hit a three-pointer in the first quarter, and Baines connected on a jumper for her 1,000th point in the second, but that was it for Seton Hall's field goals in the first half. The Pirates shot just 2-for-22 (.091) in the first half, but held UConn to just 33.3 percent shooting. The Hall trailed, 29-12, at halftime. It's Connecticut's third-fewest points scored in a single half this season.
UConn's Paige Bueckers tallied a season-high 32 points against The Hall on Jan. 17, but had only two points at halftime tonight. A turnaround jumper by Lops cut The Hall's deficit to 33-20, but that's when Bueckers got hot. She scored UConn's next nine points in only two minutes and the Huskies jumped ahead, 42-25, with 2:28 left in the third. The Huskies closed the quarter with an 8-0 run and took a 48-25 lead into the fourth.
The Huskies extended their quarter-ending run to 12-0 to begin the fourth and didn't look back.
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, February 10 when it hosts BIG EAST rival Xavier in historic Walsh Gymnasium. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers with Matt Ambrose and Isis Young on the call. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
