UNCASVILLE, CONN. – In an even battle that went down to the wire, the Seton Hall women basketball team was edged by second-seeded Creighton, 72-65, in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals at Mohegan Sun on Saturday.
Â
The game was yet another Seton Hall/Creighton classic and was a one possession game throughout the entirety of the second and third quarters. The Hall trailed by three entering the fourth, and the Bluejays scored the first five points of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game. The Pirates never found the equalizer.
Â
Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) had a team-best 15 points. Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) finished with 14 points. Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) had 11 points and five rebounds.
Â
THE STORY:
Trailing 14-10, The Hall went on an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Brazil Harvey-Carr (Camden, N.J.) to give it an 18-14 lead and prompt an early Creighton timeout. The Bluejays bounced right back, however, and scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 19-18 lead into the second. Gray found her range early, hitting a trifecta of three-pointers to lift the Pirates through the first 10 minutes.
Â
The second quarter was evenly played with the Pirates taking a 34-33 lead into the break. The Hall shot 45 percent from the floor in the first half and was 5-for-7 from downtown. Creighton made five trifectas as well, but on 15 attempts.
Â
The game remained a one-possession lead throughout the third quarter, until Creighton went on a run to start the fourth. Leading by three entering the final stanza, the Bluejays scored the first five points to grab a 58-50 lead with 8:57 left to play. Twice down the stretch, The Hall cut its deficit to only three points. Down seven with 49 seconds left, the Pirates turned over Creighton twice with full-court pressure and it resulted in a pair of layups by Baines to bring the Pirates to within three, 68-65. On the third attempt to turn over Creighton, a foul was called and Creighton ultimately was able to ice the game on the free-throw line.
