Pirates Rally For 2-1 Win Over Marist

South Orange, N.J. -- Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) scored the equalizing goal and senior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) later converted a go-ahead penalty kick goal that gave the Seton Hall women's soccer team a 2-1 win at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday night.
Tavana's goal was the 18th of her stellar career and Pucci scored her first collegiate goal to kick off her final season at Seton Hall. Freshman Olivia Beauvois (Windsor, Conn.) and senior Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) assisted on Tavana's first goal of the season.
How It Happened
The first 45 minutes was played predominantly in the middle of the field with the Pirates putting together the only chances. The Hall put three shots on net including two by Pucci and one by graduate student Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.).Â
Three minutes into the second half, a set piece from Marist off of a corner kick led to a goal off a header that gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates, however, responded moments later when Hampson sent a deep pass to Beauvois on the near sideline. Beauvois then sent a centering pass into the box where it found Tavana who tapped the ball past the diving keeper that made it a 1-1 in the 48th minute.
The Pirates continued to create chances, putting up three shots including one from Tavana off the left post that nearly gave her second goal of the night. She would be involved in giving the Pirates the game-winning goal though as she received a free kick that was played short before being fouled inside the box. Not called a penalty initially, video assistant referee confirmed that there was a foul on Tavana inside the box. Pucci was chosen to step to the spot and she delivered a strike to the lower right corner of the net that gave Seton Hall a 2-1 lead in the 76th.
Seton Hall wisely controlled the clock the rest of the way and it posted its first victory of the 2024 campaign on opening night.
