SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) had a team-high 18 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team couldn't complete its comeback in a 72-64 loss to Creighton on Saturday in Walsh Gymnasium.
Down by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Pirates cut their deficit to only two points, 64-62, with 2:29 remaining in the game, but ultimately, they couldn't find the equalizer. Creighton closed out the game with an 8-2 run, with all eight coming from All-BIG EAST forward Morgan Maly.
Masonius had 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Yaya Lops (Stamford, Conn.) collected 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.
THE STORY:
After a mostly even first quarter, Creighton found momentum in the second. Messiah Hunter (Hopewell, Va.) pulled down an offensive rebound and scored to tie the score at 17, but Creighton answered with a 9-2 run to grab a 26-19 advantage and force a Seton Hall timeout. A three-point play by Kaydan Lawson (Cleveland, Ohio) cut Creighton's lead to 31-27, but the Bluejays closed the half with an 8-0 run to take a 39-27 lead into halftime.
Creighton scored the first five points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, but the Pirates didn't fade. Down 52-38 with 3:24 left in the third quarter, The Hall closed the quarter with an 11-3 run to cut their deficit to 55-49 entering the final 10 minutes.
Down 62-52, The Hall went on a 7-0 run, and a layup by Lops off a steal by Eads cut The Hall's deficit to just three points, 62-59, with 6:30 left to play. Four minutes later, Masonius found Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick (New London, Conn.) underneath for a bucket to bring The Hall to within 64-62. Creighton, however, responded in a big way as Morgan Maly hit deep three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push their lead back to eight with only 1:11 remaining.
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, January 15 when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis. to face BIG EAST rival Marquette. Tip time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on FS1. As always, 89.5 FM WSOU or wsou.net will also carry the contest.
