Pirates Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against Providence

NEWARK, N.J. — Prince Aligbe matched his career high in points for the third time this season, scoring 19, and the Seton Hall men's basketball team put together a fiery second-half effort before ultimately falling to Providence, 69-67, at Prudential Center Tuesday evening.

Garwey Dual continues to develop as he finished with his Seton Hall-best 13 points with four assists, three steals and committed just one turnober. The Friars (11-10, 5-5 BIG EAST) shot 42.9 percent from beyond the arc with five double-digit scorers, while the Pirates (6-15, 1-9 BIG EAST) had three in double-figures and shot 45 percent from the floor in the second half.

How It Happened
In his return to the starting lineup, Dylan Addae-Wusu made his presence felt immediately for the Pirates. After a pair of Friars free throws, Addae-Wusu nailed a jumper to draw the game even at 2-2 with 19:11 remaining. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth approaching the midway point of the half, but a 4-to-0 run capped by a Dual jumper put the Pirates ahead, 11-8, with 13:58 left in the half.

The Pirates protected that lead with stifling defense, but Providence began to find an offensive rhythm. The Friars would go on a 10-to-1 run, jumping in front by 8, 25-17, with 6:26 remaining in the half. In response, Dual and Addae-Wusu marshaled a 7-0 Pirates run to draw the team within one, 25-24, with 1:24 left before the break. A pair of Friars buckets before the half expired, however, would send the Pirates to the break down four, 30-26.

Out of halftime, the Pirates saw their deficit continue to grow as Providence opened the half on a 14-to-3 run, putting the Pirates down 15, 44-29, inside the first five minutes. The Pirates defense responded with force, however, and a pair of Pirates answered the call on the offense end to bring the Pirates back into the game. Jahseem Felton and Scotty Middleton each made a pair of shots, powering The Hall on an 9-to-0 run, reducing its deficit to 6, 44-38, with 10:32 left in the game.

Seton Hall continued to draw closer while, simultaneously, stalling the Friars on the offensive end. It began with a Middleton three-pointer with 8:26 remaining reduced the deficit to three, followed a minute later by an Addae-Wusu and-one layup reducing the deficit to one, 49-48, with 7:11 left on the clock. Not long after, a torrid five-point run from Prince Aligbe put the Pirates back in front by one, 53-51, with 6:01 left in the game.

As the game began to wind down, the lead swapped back and forth before the Friars pulled a four-point lead over the Pirates, 62-58, with 2:57 remaining in the game. The Hall pulled within one at multiple points, but the team remained in search of a response to draw the game even. With three seconds remaining on the clock and the Pirates down three, Isaiah Coleman went to the line to shoot three foul shots following a three-point attempt in the waning seconds to force overtime. In the end, Coleman could not convert all the shots and the Pirates fell to the Friars, 69-67.

News & Notes

This was the 116^th meeting between the two BIG EAST institutions.
With the loss, the Pirates move to 56-60 all-time against the Friars.
The Pirates outrebounded the Friars on the offensive glass 13-to-9.
The Hall tied its season-high in forced turnovers with 19 and it registered 12 steals for the third time in the last four games.
Seton Hall finished with its second-most free throw makes (23) and attempts (30) this season, both finishing shy of the season opener against Saint Peter's where the Pirates shot 24-of-37 from the stripe.
Addae-Wusu went over 400 assists for his career on Tuesday, giving him more than 1,000 points, 400 assists and 200 steals in his career.
With 19 points, Aligbe tied his career high in points.
- This was also his sixth game with double-digit points in his last seven games.
- He also tied his career-high in minutes with 33 total minutes.
Gus Yalden recorded a career-high 17 minutes.
Dual recorded a season-high 13 points.
