SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Off the back of season-best performances from A.J. Staton-McCray and Mike Williams, the Seton Hall men's basketball team defeated the Fairfield Stags, 82-59, in front of a packed crowd inside Historic Walsh Gymnasium.
The Pirates (3-0) recorded a season-high 82 points off the back of four players recording double-digit points and a season-high 23 free throws. Meanwhile, the Stags (1-2), outside of Braden Sparks, were held to 27% (10-37) shooting from the field for a total of 39 points.
How It Happened
After collecting the opening tip-off, the Pirates found themselves in a back-and-forth affair in the opening minutes of this non-conference clash. Budd Clark and AJ Staton-McCray combined to score the Pirates' first nine points, with Elijah Fisher adding another two, to give the Pirates 12 quick points. However, Fairfield guard Braden Sparks found his way through The Hall's defense, collecting all of the Stags' 10 points to keep the Pirates up only two, 12-10 through ten minutes of play.
As the clock continued to roll, however, the Pirates began to find separation from their opposition. A four-point play from Mike Williams led off an 8-0 Seton Hall run that saw the Pirates find their defensive footing against the Stags. By the 11:44 mark in the first half, after four made free throws by TJ Simpkins, The Hall found itself up 10, 20-10. Despite that lead, Fairfield would rattle off a 7-0 run off their own to shrink The Hall's lead to 3, 20-17, with nine minutes left in the half.
Out of the break, Fairfield cut Seton Hall's lead to five, 37-32, with a quick 4-2 run to open the half. That momentum was quickly quashed by the Pirates, however, as the Pirates went on a 20-8 run to expand their lead to 17, 57-40, with 11:29 remaining in the game.

During the ensuing two minutes, neither team could find a basket as both sides struggled to find offensive momentum. The man to restart the Pirates' offense in the closing stages of the second half, eventually, turned out to be Najai Hines. The freshman big man tallied six points in the final seven minutes of the half as Seton Hall expanded its lead back to seven, 35-28, as the halftime buzzer sounded.Najai doing Najai things ✖️🏀 pic.twitter.com/MNmYo8TmTt

Over the remainder of the half, as the Pirates stifled the Stags offensively, Jacob Dar dominated offensively off of Fairfield's empty possessions. The senior tallied eight points in the final 11 minutes, six of which came around the basket. While Dar thrived, Hines added four rebounds and four points across the remainder of the game, securing his first career double-double, as the Pirates cruised to an 82-59 win as time expired inside Historic Walsh Gymnasium.Finishing through the contact 💪 pic.twitter.com/jitMdzmMjF
