RIDGESMITH, R.I. – Under the lights in Beirne Stadium, despite late chances, Seton Hall men's soccer (7-4-8) fell to the Bryant Bulldogs (17-2-2), 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, ending the team's postseason run.
Both sides struggled to muster offensive chances in the first half, leaving the match tied at 0-0 with not a single shot on goal through the first 45 minutes. The Bulldogs would put the Pirates down 1-0 in the 57th minute after a ball served into the penalty area was headed into the back of the net. In the final 20 minutes, a shift to a two-forward look gave the Pirates plenty of offensive pressure in their search for an equalizer. However, the Bulldogs held The Hall off every time, ending the Pirates' season with a 1-0 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Under the lights, the Pirates and the Bulldogs waged war in the opening half with their stout defenses. Both sides showcased physical play, but Bryant found the early momentum. Through the opening 25 minutes, the home side had three offensive chances, but The Hall quelled two of them, with the third being offside.
Seton Hall reclaimed momentum in the middle third of the half, drawing a few corners and producing a few dangerous chances. Neither side, however, could manage a shot on target through their respective distinguished defenses. The two sides entered the halftime locker room locked in a 0-0 draw with a combined zero shots on goal.
Out of the break, Bryant drew the first offensive chance of the half with a shot that sailed over the crossbar in the 47th minute. As the clock continued to tick and the Pirates' offense continued to search for a tiebreaking goal. The Bulldogs would beat them to it, though, as a ball launched into the penalty area led to a header that put Seton Hall down 1-0 in the 57th minute.
In the 65th minute, the Pirates found their best offensive opportunities of the night. Off a free kick, Agustin Resch laced a ball that forced a save out of Bryant's keeper on a ball going toward the far post. In the aftermath, Joseph Min collected the rebound and launched a shot that was blocked. The attacking sequence ended with a Konstantin Donalies shot that sailed past the right post. Despite three chances, the Pirates still remained scoreless as the clock ticked under 20 minutes remaining.
Seton Hall launched another offensive counter off a Bryant set piece in the 72nd minute with a shot from Nico Rubio at range. The quality chance was once again, however, saved by the Bulldogs. Amid growing offensive pressure from the Pirates, a chance was called offside in the 75th minute, further reducing the time for the Pirates to equalize the match.
As the minutes dwindled on the Pirates' season, The Hall shifted in formation to a two-at-the-top look. Not only did that pressure result in numerous offensive chances and immense pressure on the Bulldogs' defense. The salvo came too late as time expired on the Pirates' season before they could find an equalizer. For the Pirates, a 1-0 second-round loss to No. 11 Bryant was where the season ended.
