South Orange, N.J. - Elijah Fisher shined on the hardwood inside Historic Walsh Gymnasium on Friday night, guiding the Pirate offense to a 68-61 victory over Wagner as Seton Hall improved to 2-0 on the young season. The Pirates will face a quick turnaround, playing right back inside Walsh Gym on Monday night when they host Fairfield at 7 p.m.
How it Happened
Seton Hall came out of the gates strong, using a couple early threes from Tajuan Simpkins to jump out to a 12-3 lead through the first five minutes. Wagner would answer back in the ensuing minutes, using a 13-1 run to charge ahead for its first lead of the game. Fisher and Simpkins, as they did for much of the night, helped settle the offense and paid off good possessions with timely baskets. Fisher tapped home his own miss at the 6:33 mark to tie the score, 21-21, and later Simpkins would bury his third triple of the half to put Seton Hall back ahead, 24-23.
The Seahawks would flip the script once more before halftime, scoring eight of the next 12 points after the Simpkins three to hold a lead in the final minute of the first half. Fisher would ignite momentum before the break, taking a fast break feed from Mike Williams and throwing down a thunderous slam to cut the deficit to one.
Out of the locker room, made two-pointers from Fisher and Budd Clark pushed Seton Hall back into the lead. After a made Wagner three from Jaden Baker tied things back up, the Pirates answered with triples from AJ Staton-McCray and Fisher to push themselves back ahead.
In a close battle down the stretch, the Pirates picked up key baskets late to pull away from the Seahawks. A made tip-in from Fisher at the 7:30 mark triggered a 10-3 run by the Pirates which spanned the next four minutes to push the lead to 10, 62-52. Wagner made one final charge in the final two minutes by cutting the lead to four, but Seton Hall was able to get the stops it needed down the stretch to salt away its second win of the season.
