NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Seton Hall and Rutgers renew their rivalry for the 76th time on Saturday night, and the 11th time under the Garden State Hardwood Classic name.
- The schools are separated by an approximate 27-mile drive.
- The Pirates have won six of the 10 matchups since the rivalry took on new form in 2014, when the Boardwalk Trophy was introduced.
- The 33-pound trophy consists primarlily of recycled Asbury Park boardwalk planks that were recovered in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
- The Joe Calabrese MVP Award is given to the player of the game on the winning team of the Seton Hall-Rutgers game, and the award is named after the former journalist who passed away in 1999 and was a fixture in New Jersey sports journalism for 38 years.
- Seton Hall's last win in the series came at Jersey Mike's Arena on Dec. 11, 2022 when the Pirates grinded out a 45-43 victory in a fierce defensive battle.
- In the last 30 meetings, 21 games have been decided by six points or fewer and five contests have gone to overtime.
- Seton Hall is off to its first 9-1 start since the 2021-22 season.
- A win would give the Pirates their first 10-1 start since 2011-12.
- Seton Hall has had at least three double-digit scorers in all 10 games so far this season.
- Holloway is cousins with Rutgers associate head coach Brandin Knight.
- Knight attended Seton Hall Prep, his father, Melvin, is in the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame and was an assistant coach under Bill Raftery while also serving as associate AD under Riche Regan.
- The Pirates' six-game winning streak to open the season was their longest under Shaheen Holloway. The last time The Hall won six straight was Feb. 19-March 9, 2022.
WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO LATELY
- The Pirates downed Kansas State last Saturday, 78-67, for their first win over a Big 12 foe since downing Texas, 64-60, on Dec. 7, 2021.
- The Longhorns were ranked No. 7 in that game, which served as Seton Hall's last non-conference ranked win before it defeated No. 23 NC State at last week's Southwest Maui Invitational.
- Picked to finish last in the BIG EAST before the season, the Pirates have already surpassed last year's win total and have scored double-digit signature wins over No. 23 NC State in Maui as well as on the road at Kansas State.
- Budd Clark secured his first double-double of the season against CCSU last week, dishing out a career-high matching 12 assists to pair with 10 points.
- Five different Pirates made multiple three-pointers in last Wednesday's win, a first since Feb. 14, 2012 against St. John's.
