NEW YORK – Seton Hall's Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) was named BIG EAST Women's Basketball Player of the Week, while teammate Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on Monday.
Â
Valenzuela continued her dominant graduate season in a pair of BIG EAST Conference contests last week. At Creighton on Monday, she erupted for a team-high 23 points on the strength of 8-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point range, to go with six rebounds in Seton Hall's first victory in Omaha in 10 years. Against Xavier on Sunday, Valenzuela picked up her second double-double of the season with 16 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocks. For the week, she averaged team-highs of 19.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in a pair of Seton Hall victories.
Â
Catalon averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in another strong week for The Hall. The junior had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists in Monday's victory at Creighton. On Sunday against Xavier, Catalon matched her season-high with a team-best 24 points on the strength of 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. It's the third time this season that she's earned the Honor Roll recognition.
Â
Connecticut's Bianca Quinonez was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Those joining Catalon on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll include: Creighton's Kennedy Townsend, Connecticut's Sarah Strong, Georgetown's Destiny Agubaba and Villanova's Jasmine Bascoe.
Â
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 31 when it hosts Georgetown in historic Walsh Gymnasium. Tip time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live by ESPN+.
