South Orange, N.J. – Brianna Azevedo buried a 90th minute penalty kick goal to solidify Seton Hall's 1-0 win over Drexel on Sunday afternoon. With the result, the Pirates have opened their season with two straight wins for the second consecutive year, the first time the program has accomplished that feat since the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
The Pirates were out on the attack throughout the match, outshooting the Dragons, 19-5, and putting seven shots on target to Drexel's one.
How it Happened
The opening of the match saw Seton Hall aggressively hunting an early tally, with the most dangerous early opportunity coming in the 12th minute. On a service from outside the box, a loose ball found the head of Gianna Angelillo, looking to score her second goal in as many matches. The ball deflected off Angelillo towards a Drexel defender, with the ball seemingly headed towards the back of the net before a sprawling save from Gracie Sullivan kept things scoreless.
At halftime, the Pirates had outshot their opponents, 10-3, but were still hunting that icebreaking goal. Much of the second half saw both sides generate strong chances, but the payoff for Seton Hall would not come until the last breath.
As the clock crossed into the 90th minute, Azevedo chased down a long cross on the far side of the penalty area. Azevedo was taken down just on the edge of the penalty area, and after video review, Seton Hall was awarded a penalty kick. Azevedo stepped up to bury the goal in the bottom left of the net, freezing the goalkeeper and delivering Seton Hall a thrilling victory.
