Two Pirates Selected in Major League Baseball Draft

Benik, the 485th player chosen, was taken in the 16th round by the New York Mets on June 5. A right-handed pitcher, Benik went 9-5 with a 3.48 ERA. He set school single-season records with 16 games started and 111.1 innings pitched. Benik was named Second Team All-New Jersey by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association.
Calabrese was selected in the 21st round by the Yankees on June 6 as the 638th player chosen. Seton Hall's starting shortstop, Calabrese led the Pirates with 20 doubles and was second on the team with a .364 batting average. He was a Second Team All-New Jersey selection.
