
Beaver, Kotynski, Smith Named to All-Region Softball Team

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Seton Hall's Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL), Marlena Kotynski (Lyndhurst, NJ) and Mary Carroll Smith (Nutley, NJ) have been named to the 2001 Northeast All-Region Softball Team. Beaver and Kotynski earned first team honors while Smith was a second team selection.
Beaver, a senior righthanded pitcher, is closing out her career as the most dominating hurler in Seton Hall history. With a team-best 15-6 record and 1.19 ERA, she set a new Seton Hall single-season record with 182 strikeouts. Beaver was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team for the third consecutive year and was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week three times this season. She is the Pirates' all-time career leader with 54 wins and 621 strikeouts.
Kotynski, a senior leftfielder, is the Pirates' top hitter with a .371 average and 49 hits. She is in the midst of a career-best season, as she has raised her batting average 91 points from her previous career high (.280). Kotynski earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors for the first time and is tied for third all-time on Seton Hall's list with 141 career hits.
Smith, a freshman rightfielder, had the greatest impact among Pirate rookies. The third leading hitter with her .314 batting average, she tops Seton Hall with eight home runs and 28 RBI. Smith was also named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.
Seton Hall, the runner-up in the BIG EAST Tournament, is making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship after earning an at-large berth. The Pirates, with a record of 29-14, open play on Thursday, May 17 against 12th-ranked Washington in the regional at Norman, OK.
