BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The Seton Hall volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Long Island University (15-30, 21-30, 30-22, 30-27, 15-13) on Tuesday. After falling behind in each of the last three games, the Pirates were on the verge of losing the match, but they pulled through for the victory.
The Pirates (11-7, 2-2 BE) were led by freshman Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) who had 21 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Sophomore Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio), who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll last week, added 13 kills and seven blocks. Senior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) registered 18 digs in the SHU win.
In game three, the Pirates trailed early, falling behind to the Blackbirds 7-3, but Seton Hall fought back to tie the game and then took the lead at 12-11. The Pirates never lost the lead as they won the game 30-22.
Long Island jumped out to another quick lead in game four leading Seton Hall 12-8. The Pirates stayed close and eventually took a 19-18 lead, forcing a Blackbird timeout. Seton Hall was only able to extend the lead to three as Long Island hung around, but with the score at match point for the Pirates, a Matters kill forced the deciding game.
The Pirates found themselves in a big hole at the start of game five, as they fell behind 6-0. With the score at 10-5, Seton Hall made their move, going on a 5-0 run to tie the game. After trading points, a kill by junior Kristen Denboer (Loveland, Colo.) gave the Pirates the lead at 12-11. Seton Hall finished the come-from-behind win with a combination of an attack error by Long Island and a block from freshman Stacey Craighead (Roanoke, Va.) and Denboer.
Seton Hall goes back into BIG EAST play as they take on St. John’s, on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7:00 p.m., in Queens, N.Y.
