JAMAICA, N.Y.- The Seton Hall volleyball team fell to St. John’s on Friday night in three games (30-22, 30-21, 30-13). The Pirates got off to a strong start, but the Red Storm came back to take the match. Seton Hall falls to 11-8 and 2-3 in the BIG EAST, while St. John’s notched it’s 20th win of the season (20-1, 5-0 BE).
Freshman Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) led the Pirates with eight kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) posted six kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) registered 23 assists to move her into fourth place all-time in the SHU record book.
Game one was the most competitive of the match. The Pirates took a 4-0 lead to start the game, but the Red Storm came back and tied the game at 6-6. With the score 17-17, the Red Storm separated themselves from Seton Hall with a 5-1 run to take the lead, 23-18, forcing the Pirates to take a timeout. Seton Hall cut the deficit to 23-20, but St. John’s regained control, going on a 13-5 run to close take game one, 30-22.
In game two, the Pirates fell behind 6-0 off the bat and only managed to get as close as four at 15-11. St. John’s increased their lead to 27-17 and cruised to victory in game two. The Red Storm closed the match in game three, beating the Pirates 30-13.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to face Connecticut at 2:00 p.m.
