VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Seton Hall volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 (30-23, 27-30, 30-22, 28-30, 15-12) loss to Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The defeat drops the Pirates' record to 11-11 overall and 2-7 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the attack with 17 kills. Junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) notched double-doubles. Rahrer had 59 assists and 10 digs, and Matters registered 14 kills, 22 digs, and added four service aces. Senior Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) posted a team-best 23 digs.
After a 30-23 loss in game one, Seton Hall went to work quickly in the second set by doubling up the Wildcats (14-9; 6-3 BE), 14-7. Villanova crept back into the game and tied the score at 20-20, but Seton Hall never relinquished the lead and held on for a 30-27 victory.
The Wildcats jumped out to the fast start in the third game and regained the match lead, 2-1, after a 30-22 win.
The Pirates trailed by four in the middle stage of game four, but stayed in the game. Seton Hall tied the game three times, only to see Villanova quickly regain the lead. The fourth time turned out to be the charm for the Pirates, who finally took the lead and clinched the fifth game with a Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas) kill.
Seton Hall had to come back again in the deciding game to tie the score at 11-11, but the Wildcats used two straight kills to regain the lead and held on to pick up the win.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27, against Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium.
