SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team kept its postseason hopes alive after defeating Georgetown, 3-1 (30-19, 30-24, 23-30, 30-27), on Saturday. The Pirates (12-11; 3-7 BE) came into the contest three and half matches out of the final BIG EAST Championship spot with five matches to go. Junior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Seton Hall with 19 kills.
Senior Kelly Widders (Dublin, Ohio) tied a career-high for the second time this season with eight blocks. Junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) handed out 58 assists, while freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) registered 14 kills. Sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 kills and 13 digs for her second straight double-double. Seton Hall is 11-2 when Matters records double-double on the season.
Seton Hall coasted to victories in the first two games, but could not find away to put the Hoyas (5-20; 1-8 BE) away in game three. Georgetown continued to fight back in the fourth game, taking a 10-9 advantage.
The Pirates quickly regained the lead and held it until an 8-3 Hoya run put them back on top 22-20. Seton Hall came back with an 8-2 run of their own to push the Hoyas to the brink of elimination. Georgetown made one last push to hold on, cutting the deficit to two at 29-27, but senior Kristen Denboer's (Loveland, Colo.) 10th kill of the match finished the win.
The Pirates face South Florida on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium. Prior to the game, the Seton Hall athletic department will recognize four seniors on the squad to celebrate their accomplishments.
