MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Junior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a career-day with 28 kills and a .480 attack percentage, but it was not enough as the Seton Hall volleyball team was defeated by West Virginia in five games (30-20, 30-27, 30-32, 16-30, 15-13).
Sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) and junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) both notched double-doubles in the contest. Matters ended up with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Rahrer had 52 assists and 12 digs. Senior Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) had a strong defensive game with 26 digs.
Seton Hall (10-9; 1-5 BE) struggled in game one, and the Mountaineers held a comfortable lead for most of the second frame. The Pirates showed signs of life, cutting a seven point deficit down to one at the 25-24 point of the game, but it proved to be too late and West Virginia held a 2-0 edge in the match.
The late run in the second game carried over to game three for Seton Hall, as they stayed close with the Mountaineers in game three. The Pirates finally took the lead at 20-19, and pushed the advantage up to three points. West Virginia fought back to tie the game, and were serving for the match with the score 29-27, but back-to-back kills by Meyers and senior Kelly Widders (Dublin, Ohio) tied the game at 29-29. After trading the next two points, the duo of Matters and Meyers kept the Pirates alive with two consecutive kills.
The Pirates won game four easily and looked to cap the comeback in game five, taking a 10-9 lead, but the Mountaineers would not go away. Leading 13-12, Seton Hall committed three straight attack errors to give West Virginia the win.
Seton Hall will return Walsh Gymnasium to take on Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2:00 p.m.
