SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team had to hang on to beat NJIT, 3-2 (30-17, 30-23, 23-30, 30-32, 16-14), at Walsh Gym. The Pirates won their fourth consecutive match to improve to 4-3 on the season. Freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had another outstanding performance, posting 27 kills and 14 digs to lead Seton Hall.
The Pirates cruised to victories in the first two games and looked like they were on their way to the sweep after taking a quick 4-0 lead in game three. The Highlanders (0-7) rallied with a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the match, 7-6. NJIT extended the advantage to as many as six points as they kept the contest alive.
The Highlanders used the game three win as momentum in game four, taking a 5-1 lead, but Seton Hall came back to take control in the middle stages of the game holding a 19-16 advantage. The Pirates seemed to have the match wrapped up, holding on to a 27-24 lead, but NJIT scored five of the next six points, which gave the Highlanders game point at 29-28. After a kill by sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) knotted the game at 30-30, Seton Hall committed two straight errors to force the fifth game.
The deciding game went back and forth, but the Pirates took a small 12-10 lead. The Highlanders scored three straight to regain the lead. With the score 15-14, NJIT's libero, Sabrina Baby, was serving for the match but the serve hit the net to tie the game. Seton Hall took advantage and two straight kills by Osmun preserved the win.
Matters recorded 18 kills and a career-high 28 digs for her second consecutive double-double. Sophomore Stacey Craighead (Roanoke, Va.) posted a career-high 16 kills for the match, and junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) handed out 59 assists.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 against Pennsylvania at 7:30 p.m. at Walsh Gymnasium. The match is part of the Seton Hall Invitational, being held in South Orange on Sept. 7-8.
