SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall volleyball team made quick work of Rutgers, winning 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-9) in front of a packed crowd in Walsh Gym on Saturday. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) was the top individual performer once again for the Pirates (9-8; 2-1 BE), posting 28 digs.
Sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, nine digs, and three aces. Senior Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) had a strong defensive match with 17 digs.
Freshmen Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) and Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) each played key roles in the victory as well. Matusiak registered a match-high 11 kills, also notching a .500 attack percentage, while Wrobel racked up 10 kills and a .625 hitting percentage.
The Pirates jumped out to an 8-2 lead to kick off the match, and three consecutive Matusiak kills gave SHU a commanding 16-6 lead on their way to the 25-9 win.
The Scarlet Knights (1-11; 0-3 BE) turned the tables on the Pirates, taking an 8-2 lead of their own in set two. Seton Hall rattled off six straight points to tie the score, and went ahead 11-10 after an Osmun kill.
With the score 21-17 in favor of the Pirates, Rutgers put together a 4-0 run to knot the score. SHU responded with a Wrobel kill and two straight aces from Matters to keep the Pirates in control as they won the set, 25-22.
Set three began much like the first with Seton Hall jumping out to a 10-4 lead, and did not let the Knights make a run to complete the sweep.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, October 7, when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to face LIU at 5:00 p.m.
