DURHAM, N.H. The Seton Hall volleyball team defeated Rhode Island, 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 14-25, 25-17, 15-9), at the Holly Young Invitational. Later in the day, the Pirates (5-5) lost to New Hampshire, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19), to close out the tournament.
Seniors Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.), along with sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Against the Rams, Meyers recorded a match-high 17 kills with a .517 hitting percentage. Osmun posted a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Matters and Rahrer also had strong matches. Matters led the defense with 21 digs, while Rahrer had 51 assists.
A service ace by Meyers capped a 13-4 run to start the first set for the Hall. Trailing 18-9, the Rams (5-4) outscored the Pirates, 12-4, to make it a one-point contest. Seton Hall never lost the lead, and finished the set after URI committed an attack error.
The Pirates jumped out to another big lead in the second set, but the Rams put together a 9-2 run to knot the score at 22-22. After trading the next few points, an error from Meyers gave URI its first lead of the match. The teams went back and forth for another few scores, but an ace tied the match, 1-1.
In the fourth set, SHU was the team that got off to the slow start, and they never recovered, dropping the frame, 25-14.
The Pirates recaptured their earlier success and went ahead 10-5 after a service ace from Rahrer. Later in the set, Rahrer set up freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) for one of her 10 kills to extend the lead to seven, as the Hall forced the deciding set.
The fifth set started close, but the Pirates slowly pulled away and finished the victory with a kill from Meyers.
In the second contest, Seton Hall and the Wildcats (2-8) stayed close for much of the first set, but a 7-1 run by UNH put the Pirates in a 1-0 hole.
New Hampshire controlled the second set until the Hall scored seven of eight points to tie the score, 21-21. With the score tied, 22-22, the Wildcats scored two straight and finished the set by a score of 25-23.
Seton Hall stayed alive in the third set, holding a slim lead most of the way. UNH tried to finish the sweep by cutting its deficit to 17-16, but the Pirates pulled away to stay alive in the match.
The fourth frame saw SHU fall behind early, and they never recovered as the Wildcats picked up the win.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, September 16, at NJIT.
