SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team had three players post double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Pirates fell to Louisville, 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19), on Saturday. SHU (8-14, 2-4) was led by junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who posted a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs.
Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) had 16 kills and a season-best 13 digs. Freshman Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.), making her first career start, also had a strong match with 11 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) handed out 51 assists.
The Cardinals (11-8, 4-2) scored five unanswered points to take an 11-6 edge in the first set. The Pirates methodically worked their way back into the game and cut the deficit to 21-20 after a service error by Louisville. A couple of miscues by Seton Hall on the next two points put the Cardinals back up by three, allowing Louisville to take the set.
Set two was controlled by the Cardinals from the get-go after a Gwen Rucker kill put Louisville on top, 10-5. The Pirates trailed by as many as nine points in the frame and went into the intermission down, 2-0, in the match.
A 5-1 run in the third gave SHU a 6-5 lead early in the set. The Pirates built the lead up to 16-12 after an attack error, but the Cards stormed back to tie things up at 18-18 after an 8-2 spurt. Osmun came up with a kill to keep the Hall in front, and an attack error and an ace by Trudeau gave the Pirates a 21-18 cushion. Lousiville threatened again by scoring four of the next six points, forcing Seton Hall to use a timeout. Right out of the break, Hugeback spiked home a kill and the Pirates survived to play another set after an attack error.
Lola Arslanbekova put the Cardinals ahead, 10-6, in the fourth set with a kill to set the tone. Still trailing, 19-13, SHU would battle back with one more push. A 5-1 spurt pulled the Pirates within two, 20-18, however Louisville recorded the next two points and finished the match with a 25-19 set victory.
Seton Hall will host Cincinnati on Sunday, October 18, at noon in Walsh Gymnasium.
