SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped its fourth straight decision after a 3-1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-22, 25-11) loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. The Pirates are now 8-14 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play.
Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led SHU once again with 16 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) started for the second straight match and had a solid outing with 12 kills. Freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) handed out 43 assists to go with 16 digs.
After a tight start in set one, the Bearcats (15-8, 6-1) grabbed a 13-10 advantage, leading to a Pirate timeout. Seton Hall responded by a ripping off an 8-2 run, capped by a Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) kill to go ahead, 18-15. The Bearcats pulled within one on four occasions and finally tied the score, 23-23. After an Osmun kill gave the Pirates set-point, Cincinnati scored the next two points, putting themselves in position to steal the frame, but SHU regrouped and scored four of the last five points of the set and take the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bearcats pulled away in the middle of the second, taking a 15-10 lead after a Pirate attack error. Cincinnati continued to dictate the scoreboard, 22-17, before the Hall would rally to try to steal the set. Back-to-back kills by Osmun and Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.), teamed with an ace by Osmun made it a two-point contest. However, the Bearcats traded the next several points with the Pirates to win, 25-22.
Things continued to heat up in the third set, which featured 13 tie scores. Down, 15-12, Seton Hall slowly came back to tie things up, 17-17. The teams would continue to trade points back-and-forth until the score was, 22-22, and Cincinnati finally ended the see-saw battle by scoring three straight points to put the Pirates away.
Seton Hall seemed to run out of gas in the fourth as the Bearcats jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set, and coasted to a 25-11 win to finish the match.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, October 24, when they host Rutgers at 2:00 p.m. The match is part of the National Dig Pink Campaign against breast cancer.
