SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-22) decision at Syracuse on Sunday. The Pirates are now 8-12 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 13 kills and 11 digs. She is now just one shy of becoming just the seventh player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-dig plateau. Sophomore Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) also had strong day with 13 kills and 15 digs. Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had 15 digs to extend her nation leading double-figure streak to 57 matches.
Seton Hall took control of the first set, going ahead 17-12 after an Orange (13-5, 3-1) service error. Syracuse chipped away at the Pirate lead and pulled within a point at 23-22. The teams traded the next two points, and a service error by Sarah Morton gave SHU the set win.
The second set was a battle from start to finish with neither team leading by more than two points. Freshman Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) gave the Pirates a 17-15 advantage with a kill, but the Orange refused to go away. Syracuse netted the next two points, and finally went on top, 21-20, after a block by Samantha Hinz.
Back-to-back kills by Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) and Osmun made it set point for the Hall, but Annabelle Pellerin bailed out the Orange with a spike. Hinz and Pellerin teamed up for a block to set up set point for Syracuse only to have DeVries answer with a kill to further extend the frame.
The Orange finally rallied for two straight points after an attack error and yet another block by Hinz to tie things up.
Kacie MacTavish gave Syracuse a 13-7 lead in the third, but Seton Hall went on a 9-2 run to gain a 16-15 lead. A Pirate ball handling error quickly tied the score, and the Orange regained the lead on the next point. SHU evened the score, 18-18, but Syracuse finished the set on a 7-2 tear to take a 2-1 hold of the match.
The Pirates played from behind for much of the fourth game, but once again showed their toughness battling back from a four-point deficit early in the set to tie the score, 18-18. Both teams continued to trade points until a Thornquist kill finally gave Seton Hall a slim 21-20 advantage. Two MacTavish kills gave the lead back to the Orange, 23-22, and Syracuse held of the Pirates to finish the win.
The Pirates are back in action on Friday, October 9, at Villanova for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
