CHICAGO, Ill. - The Seton Hall volleyball team came up with a crucial, 3-2 (25-21, 14-25, 24-26, 25-23. 15-12), triumph at DePaul on Sunday. The Pirates (10-16, 4-6) fell behind 2-1 in the match and trailed for parts of the fourth set before rallying to pick up the program's 500th win in its 31st year of competition.
Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) played an outstanding all-around match, recording 17 kills, 14 digs, a career-high six aces, and four blocks. Freshman Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched 17 kills to go with 11 digs, and has now reached double-figure kills in each match since entering the starting lineup. Freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) posted a double-double with 54 assists and 11 digs.
Seton Hall controlled much of the first set, taking an early 9-4 lead on a Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) kill. Trudeau pushed the advantage to 18-12 with a kill, but the Blue Demons (6-19, 0-10) rattled off a 7-2 run to pull within a point. After DePaul tied the score, 21-21, Hugeback came up with a kill to spark the Pirates as they netted the final four points of the set to win, 25-21.
In the second, the Blue Demons got off to the fast start and went ahead, 10-5. SHU cut the margin to 13-10 on one of Sarah Osmun's (Crystal Lake, Ill.) team-high 18 kills, but that would be as close as they would come. DePaul would outscore the Pirates, 12-4, the rest of the way to tie the match.
After a close start to set three, the Blue Demons pulled away with a 6-1 spurt to take a comfortable 16-10 cushion. Seton Hall chipped away and capitalized on some sloppy play by DePaul to knot things up, 22-22. A kill and a service ace made it set point for the Blue Demons, but a pair of attack errors gave the Pirates new life and evened the score, 24-24. However, DePaul came up with a combination of a kill and an ace to put SHU on the brink of elimination.
Matusiak gave the Pirates a 12-9 lead in the fourth, but the Blue Demons would outscore SHU 6-2 to take over the advantage by one. With DePaul still leading 17-15, miscues began to cost the Blue Demons once again. Another Matusiak score coupled with an attack error and a ball handling error put the score back in favor of the Pirates. The teams would trade the next several points, and DePaul would go ahead 20-19 off a ball handling error by the Pirates, but the lead would be short-lived. After a timeout, SHU scored five of the next six points to force set point, 24-21. The Blue Demons picked up two straight to make things interesting, but the Pirates extended the match on an Osmun kill.
The fifth set was another back-and-forth battle that saw eight tie scores and three lead changes. DePaul was on top 7-5 before the Pirates made their move. A block by Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) and Osmun would tie the score and Osmun struck again with a kill to give SHU the lead. After trading the next six points, DeVries and Matusiak rejected an attack attempt to give the Pirates a 12-10 edge and that would be all the separation they would need as they preserved the road win.
Seton Hall will return home on Friday, November 6, against St. John's at 7:00 p.m.
