SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - From the opening serve, the Seton Hall volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders as they bested St. John's in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15) victory in Walsh Gym on Friday night. The Pirates (11-16, 5-6) are now just a ½ -match out of the eighth and final BIG EAST Championship position with the team they are chasing, Connecticut, coming into town on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) picked up nearly everything on SHU's side of the net, and had a match-high 29 digs to push her nation leading double-figure dig streak to 64 matches. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) recorded 14 kills to pace the offense. Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 12 kills on a .324 clip, and sophomore Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) tallied seven blocks.
Wrobel and Osmun teamed up for a block to cap off a 10-4 run to start the opening set. The Red Storm (9-18, 2-9) fell behind 19-11 after a Matusiak ace, but began to make a run and cut the deficit to 21-17. Osmun halted the rally with a kill, and sparked a 4-1 spurt to close out the frame.
St. John's scored the first two points of the second, but that would be its only lead of the entire match. The Pirates rattled off six straight, and a Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) ace gave Seton Hall an 11-5 edge. The Red Storm closed within two points, 16-14, but that would be as close as the set would become. A Matusiak kill and an attack error by St. John's built the cushion back up to four, and SHU headed into the intermission with a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third, the Pirates blitzed the Red Storm with an 8-2 spurt to kick things off. Freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) set up Hugeback for a score, marking one of her 38 assists, to extend the margin to 18-7, and Seton Hall rolled to a 25-15 triumph to complete the sweep.
Sunday's match against the Huskies will be the final home match of the season. Prior to the contest, Seton Hall will honor seniors Allie Matters, Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas), and Stacey Craighead (Roanoke, Va.).
