BRONX, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team edged Sacred Heart, 3-1 (25-20, 28-26, 21-25, 25-23), in the first of four matches at the Rose Hill Classic. The Pirates (3-6) will look to avenge an early season loss to host school, Fordham, tonight at 7:00 p.m.
Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had a strong contest with 14 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) played her best game of her young career with nine kills and a team-high 16 digs. Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had 10 digs and needs just 5 more this evening to become the all-time school leader.
After a tight start to set one, the Pirates pulled away with a mini 4-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Pioneers (5-3) stayed with the hall for most of the way, but were only able to come within a point at 19-18. Seton Hall scored the next three points and held on to take the early match-lead.
The second set was just as close, with the frame seeing a series of ties and lead changes. Late in the game, Sacred Heart looked to even the match, holding 24-21 edge. The Pirates scored three straight to even things, and the teams traded the next four points. An attack error gave Seton Hall the lead and Osmun slammed a kill to give her team a thrilling 28-26 win.
The Pirates looked as if they would cruise to a sweep in the third, taking a 13-6 lead, but the Pioneers would not go away. Sacred Heart went on an 11-2 run to turn its deficit into a 24-20 lead and kept the match going after splitting the next two points.
In the fourth, the back-and-forth play continued with both teams holding slim leads at various points in the set. Seton Hall looked to put things away after back-to-back kills by Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) and Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) gave the Pirates a 21-19 edge. The Pioneers took the next two points to tie the game, but the Hall regained the two-point cushion after a pair of Sacred Heart miscues.
The trend of scoring two straight continued after the Pioneers recorded consecutive kills, tying the score, 23-23. A bad serve by Sacred Heart forced match point, and Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) shut the door with a kill to preserve the triumph.
