BRONX, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team came up short against Central Connecticut State, 3-2 (17-25, 25-15, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9), on Saturday morning. The Pirates (3-8) will finish up play at the Rose Hill Classic at 4:30 p.m. against Manhattan.
Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) paced the offense with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tied a career-high with 11 kills and set a new one with six blocks. Sophomore Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.) also provided a spark off the bench with nine kills.
The Seton Hall offense had its most efficient set of the season, committing just two errors on 27 attempts in the frame. With the score tied, 12-12, the Pirates ripped off a 7-1 run to hold a comfortable lead and coasted to a 25-17 win.
CCSU (2-3) played much better in the second set and held a significant lead throughout the frame and won easily, 25-15.
Seton Hall trailed 15-10 in the third, but climbed back to knot things up at 20-20. After the Blue Devils scored the next three points, Matusiak racked up a pair of kills to tie the score, 23-23. The teams swapped points, and Central Connecticut State finished the set with a kill and block.
The Blue Devils looked to put the Pirates away early in the fourth, surging to a 6-2 advantage. SHU evened the score quickly with a 6-2 spurt of its own. Eventually, the Pirates went ahead, 20-17, after a DeVries kill. CCSU closed within 23-22, but kills by Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas) and Matusiak forced the final set.
In the fifth set, the Hall was in dire straits again as they fell behind, 13-6, and the Blue Devils ended the comeback bid.
