
Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Victory Over NJIT

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team swept NJIT, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-23), on the opening night of the SHU Invitational. The win improves the Pirates to 5-8 on the season.
Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) extended here double-figure dig streak to 50 matches after a 17 dig effort, which included 10 in the opening frame. Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 11 kills with a .402 attack percentage to go with 12 digs. Sophomore Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) had eight blocks, and continued her strong play in the middle.
Seton Hall went ahead 7-2 in set one after several costly mistakes by the Highlanders (9-3). The Pirates took its largest lead of the frame after a Wrobel spike extended the cushion to, 19-10, and SHU rolled to a 25-18 win.
NJIT improved its play in the second, but with the score tied 10-10, the Hall began to break away. An Osmun service ace propelled the Pirates to a 15-12 advantage, and a late 6-1 spurt was enough to give Seton Hall a 25-17 set triumph.
In the third, SHU looked poised to put the Highlanders away after a Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) kill gave the Pirates a 12-7 lead. NJIT used a 7-2 spurt to tie the score, 14-14, but Seton Hall answered by scored four-straight to regain control.
The Highlanders continued to fight back, slowly getting back into the set and finally took a 23-22 lead after Fernanda Lima and Katrina Hornstein teamed up for a block. After a Pirate timeout, another crucial kill by Matusiak knotted things up and two NJIT miscues sealed the sweep.
The Pirates will play two matches on the final day of the SHU Invitational, facing-off against Hofstra at 11:00 a.m. and then Yale at 6:30 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.
